The best things to do in Hong Kong in June

It’s shaping up to be a culture-packed month in Hong Kong as homegrown Hollywood stars, T-pop legends and major art exhibitions ignite the city. M+ museum, Kai Tak Sports Park and other venues will be jam-packed with eager crowds, while sports fans will line the harbourfront to watch dragon boaters from far and wide power through the waves in the iconic competition.

Jimmy O. Yang comedy

Hong Kong’s very own Jimmy O. Yang will be making his hometown debut this month, bringing his blend of witty American stand-up to the city from 13-15 June . Comedian and actor Yang – who’s starred in several Hollywood films including Silicon Valley and Crazy Rich Asians – will explore his Asian American identity, Hong Kong roots and cultural differences with his razor-sharp observational comedy.  

Cirque du Soleil 

Renowned for their contemporary acrobatic take on the circus, Cirque du Soleil will bring their new show Kooza to the Central Harbourfront Event Space in a two-hour spectacular from 21 May. Through slapstick comedy and death-defying stunts, the story of a character called The Innocent is told as they navigate a mystical world and embark on a journey of self-discovery. No doubt you’ll be glued to your seat when the Wheel of Death comes out.  

Hong Kong Disneyland’s birthday 

To celebrate its 20th birthday, Hong Kong Disneyland will be throwing a spectacular celebration – The Most Magical Party of All – from 28 June. Beyond the classic Disney enchantment, festivities will include a dazzling new parade, an exciting new show and the park’s biggest fireworks spectacle yet. Of course, there’ll be exclusive merchandise, themed treats and special Disneyland hotel offers that make for a truly unforgettable experience. 

International Dragon Boat Races

The Dragon Boat Festival may have just passed, but the thrill continues with this high-stakes competition . Teams from around the world will battle it out in a blazing race across Victoria Harbour, with international champions, students and more gunning for gold. Taking place between 7-8 June, Sunday is the nail-biting final, alongside the fancy dress competition and the inspiring Cancer Survivors’ Championship. 

Sigg Collection

M+’s monumental Sigg Collection exhibition will receive a complete overhaul this month as a spotlight on contemporary Chinese art between 1990-2012 takes centre stage. Entitled Inner Worlds , works by key artists like Yue Minjun, Liu Wei, Chen Guangwu and more will adorn the gallery – exploring the period when Chinese artists graced the world stage. It will open in phases on 27 June, leading up to its full showing from 22 August.  

Life of Pi

Following its award-winning runs on Broadway and the West End, Life of Pi is set to make its Hong Kong debut between 26-29 June. After Pi Patel's family immigrates to Canada, they sell their zoo and bring their animals with them. Tragedy strikes when the boat crashes, leaving Pi stranded on a lifeboat with a tiger named Richard Parker. This tale is brought to life with spectacular puppetry, stunning visual effects and masterful storytelling.  

Jay Chou in Hong Kong

Another carnival is coming to town in the shape of superstar musician and performer Jay Chou. The Taiwanese legend will play ringmaster at the Kai Tak Sports Stadium with his show Jay Chou Carnival World Tour  between 27-29 June, bringing hits like A Dandelion’s Promise, Nocturne and more to the glitzy arena. With tickets selling like hotcakes, it’s set to be one of the biggest concert spectacles of the year. 

Carnival spirit

If the Rio Carnival is on your bucket list, then get a taste of it at this 10-day Brazilian festival at AIA Vitality Park. Samba, capoeira, music and freestyle football will all be on show at this free extravaganza, bringing the country’s vibrant spirit to Hong Kong between 20-29 June. Expect delicious food, drinks and endless vibes in this lively celebration of Brazilian culture.
