Medical assistance

If you need to bring medical equipment for your travels, please read the requirements on packing and usage to meet your medical needs. 

Frequent travellers medical card

We offer a Frequent Traveller’s Medical Card (FREMEC) to passengers who travel regularly and require special assistance or medical clearance for a stable medical condition or disability.

Application for FREMEC

Passengers holding a FREMEC are no longer encouraged to submit a MEDA form signed by their physicians each time they fly with us, provided there has been no change in their condition or the assistance required. With the FREMEC, our reservations office will have your travel requirements on record so that special assistance can be arranged when you fly with us.

Please note that you can only apply for a FREMEC (pdf) after you have submitted a MEDA form. The FREMEC will only be issued to passenger with a stable medical condition and the MEDA form would have been completed with all of the information regarding the passenger’s condition, POC device, settings, etc. The FREMEC card will also advise the passenger on our battery requirements.

Advice for passengers using Portable Oxygen Concentrator (POC)

Passengers using POC with a valid FREMEC are not required to provide physician statement.

Passenger medical clearance form (MEDA)

Some passengers need special medical consideration when they travel. In some cases this may involve clearance for fitness to fly from our Aviation Medicine Unit. Medical clearance to fly may be required when:

  • A passenger’s fitness to travel is in doubt as a result of recent illness, hospitalisation, injury or surgery and there is reasonable doubt that they can complete the flight safely without requiring extraordinary medical assistance during the flight.
  • A passenger has an existing medical condition where there is reasonable doubt that they can complete the flight safely without requiring extraordinary medical assistance during the flight e.g. breathing difficulties, unstable angina, terminal illness, etc.
  • A passenger requires supplemental oxygen inflight. (please also read Passengers requiring oxygen inflight)
  • A passenger require medical equipment inflight e.g. stretcher, incubator, etc.

Note: Passengers wishing to use Continuous Positive Airways Pressure (CPAP) Devices inflight do not need medical clearance. We do however; still require advance notice of 48 hours before your flight to ensure that your device complies with safety regulations.

About MEDA

In certain situations, a passenger may be asked to fill in a Passenger Medical Clearance (MEDA) form with details of your condition. The purpose of the MEDA form is for Cathay Pacific, in conjunction with your doctor, to determine that you are able to complete your journey safely and whether any special assistance or medical services are required.

If you are requested to submit a MEDA form, please ensure that Part 1 and Part 2 are completed in full.

Part 1 is to be completed by the passenger and Part 2 by the treating doctor. The completed forms should be submitted to the local Reservation office as early as possible, but no less than 48 hours prior to your scheduled flight departure time.

Please note: for all requests of inflight medical oxygen or non-peanut or tree nut containing cocktail snacks, we recommend that the completed MEDA form be submitted 72 hours prior to your scheduled flight departure time.
