Cathay Pacific wins the Total Caring Award in recognition of commitment to corporate social responsibility

Cathay Pacific Airways today received the Total Caring Award 2009/10 at a recognition ceremony for the Caring Company NGO Partnership Day. The event was officiated by Henry Tang, Chief Secretary for Administration of the Hong Kong SAR.

The Total Caring Award is the top award under the Caring Company Scheme, organised by the Hong Kong Council of Social Service (HKCSS) since 2003 to recognise local companies that demonstrate a “continual and sustainable total commitment in caring for the well-being of the community, the employees and the environment”.

Cathay Pacific has been awarded the Caring Company Logo every year since the Caring Company Scheme was launched, while 2010 marked the third time for the airline to receive the “Five Year Plus” Caring Company Logo.

Accepting the award at the ceremony, the airline’s Chief Executive, Tony Tyler, said, “This is a very important honour for our airline, especially as were selected from more than 2,000 other organisations to be awarded with the Caring Company Logo this year. Cathay Pacific has made substantial investments to develop Hong Kong as one of the world’s leading global transportation hubs, in the process becoming one of the biggest employers in Hong Kong. At the same time we have always endeavoured to be a responsible corporate citizen by contributing to our community, caring for our employees and protecting the environment."

Cathay Pacific was selected as the Total Caring Award winner after making a presentation to an adjudication panel, comprising representatives from various international and local corporate social responsibility organisations, at which the airline demonstrated its continued commitment to being a responsible corporate citizen.

Caring for the community

Leveraging the uniqueness of the airline business, Cathay Pacific motivates its staff to serve the community in different areas through the “CX Volunteers” corporate volunteer team. Its initiatives range from smaller projects responding to the specific needs of local communities to flagship youth programmes such as “I Can Fly”, which enhances the aviation knowledge of young people and encourages them to serve the community, and “English on Air”, which helps to improve the spoken English of secondary school students. The airline’s volunteers clocked up more than 188,000 hours of community work between 2004 and 2009.

Cathay Pacific has made a wide range of charitable donations, providing charities with flight tickets, other in-kind donations and professional advice. Regular beneficiaries include the Cathay Pacific Wheelchair Bank, the Life Education Activity Programme and Project Orbis. The airline and its employees have also participated in fundraising activities following major disasters such as the Asian tsunami and the Sichuan earthquake.

Since the Cathay Pacific/UNICEF Change for Good Inflight Fundraising Programme was launched in 1991, more than HK$91 million of spare change has been collected from passengers travelling on Cathay Pacific flights. The money goes to help UNICEF healthcare projects in more than 150 developing countries around the world.

Caring for the environment

Cathay Pacific is deeply committed to doing everything in its power to reduce the impact of its operations on the environment, implementing a number of environment-friendly practices both on the ground and in the air. The airline has worked to reduce carbon dioxide emission by modernising its fleet, adopting flexible routes and reducing weight on its aircraft. It also runs an inflight recycling programme and has developed protocols to reduce leftover food.

Cathay Pacific was also the first Asian airline to launch a carbon-offset initiative, named “FLY greener”, in December 2007. This allows passenger to pay to offset the emissions generated by their travel.
