Best things to do in Hong Kong for New Year's Eve
It’s time to say goodbye to 2021 and welcome 2022: a year of promise and prosperity
    SEVVA rooftop party

We made it through another year — and what a year it was. Now we’re on the home stretch of 2021, it’s time to bid farewell to the past. To help you plan for the big night, we’ve selected some of the best things to do in Hong Kong for New Year’s Eve — from lavish NYE feasts and ticketed events to our favourite sunset hikes.

    The-Sixteenth new year's eve disco party 2021

Attend one of the hottest parties in town

Secure your spot at one of the most coveted parties in Hong Kong this New Year’s Eve.

Say ‘peace out’ to 2021 and ring in the new year at a boogie wonderland: Pirata Group’s newest venture, The Sixteenth , is hosting a Disco Countdown Under the Stars party this New Year’s Eve. Think big hair, flared trousers, chunky platform boots and sequins with free-flowing drinks and nibbles. Secure yourself a ticket for this sought-after party by booking the New Year’s Eve second seating at Honjokko, La Favorita or TMK Funk & Rolls on the 31st.

There’s another disco taking place tucked away on Hollywood Road. At the super-sustainable Penicillin Bar, DJ Jamie Maddock will helm the decks at the Low Carbon Disco Party, which includes a glass of sustainable champagne for the countdown and free-flow canapés from 10pm till late. The menu includes the climate-positive One Penicillin, One Tree cocktail: for each drink purchased, one tree is planted in Borneo’s endangered Kalimantan rainforest.

The-Candour-Gala black tie red carpet event met chandon

Bar-lounge Candour  will be hosting a one-night-only red carpet event, The Candour Gala. The Elgin Street bar will be transformed into a glamourous red carpet-inspired event, with a walkway out front to welcome its guests. For those after a meal before the main black-tie event, there will be a three-course set menu being served from 6-9pm before the Gala commences at 10pm. Champagne will be flowing (four hours of Moët & Chandon, to be precise), hip hop beats will be blasting, and the countdown to 2022 will be one to remember.

Wishing you were somewhere a little more exotic this festive season? Be transported to Club Tropicana at The Daily Tot , which will be hosting an all-things-tropical New Year’s Eve party. DJ Jarius is at the decks, drinks will be free-flowing, and guests will be dancing the night away at this rum bar.

    Sevva-Jamal-Corrie-Singing-Performance

Dance the night away with a live music countdown

Live music is back, just in time for New Year’s Eve celebrations.

If you’re after spectacle, check out the Hong Kong Tourism Board’s New Year Countdown Concert  at the West Kowloon Art Park. Headlined by Hong Kong’s most popular boy band, Mirror, the show will include performances from artists including Gin Lee, Alfred Hui, AGA, and the Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra. A countdown clock will be displayed on the massive façade of the newly opened M+, so that concertgoers can join in on the countdown to 2022.

Over on the Southside, Ocean Park will be hosting music festival Countdown in Nocturnland: Ride the Ocean Express to the summit of the park, where you’ll find stages headlined by DJs BEAUZ, Pink Panda and Yako.

Looking for something a little more intimate? Ring in the New Year on Sevva’s stunning terrace at Sevva  Holiday Cheers event, featuring American singer-songwriter Jamal Corrie; or swing the night away with a live jazz band at the Rosewood’s Darkside .

Catch the last sunset of 2021

If you prefer to keep away from the crowds, a sunset hike is the perfect way to say goodbye to 2021.

The perhaps natural choice to witness 2021’s final sunset is atop Lantau’s Sunset Peak. This aptly named hike offers stunning panoramic views of Hong Kong’s islands, Lantau Peak, and surrounding mountain trails. It takes roughly 2 hours to reach the peak from the start of the hike, but leave yourself plenty of time to make sure you’re rewarded with the magnificent view at sunset – and pack a head torch, so you’re safe on the way down.

For an end-of-year challenge, opt for Sharp Peak. The view from the top of this steep mountain rewards you with 360-degree views of Sai Kung’s stunning coastline and its surrounding rocky islands — the perfect setting to watch the sun go down. Perhaps the best thing about this option is that you can end the hike at one of Hong Kong’s top camping spots: Ham Tin beach.

If you’d prefer to stay a little closer to the middle of town, Mount High West offers unobstructed views out over the west. Those who make the climb for sunset (it’s best to get there early to avoid the crowds on the stairs up) will be rewarded with the dazzling reflection of the sun’s rays on the water from every side.

uma nota festive menu new year's eve

Savour your final meal of the year

Throughout such a tumultuous year, there’s one thing that has remained fantastic: Hong Kong’s dining scene. Welcome 2022 with one of these delicious New Year’s Eve tasting menus.

Welcome the new year at Uma Nota’s Réveillon. Inspired by the Brazilian motto ano novo, vida nova – meaning ‘New Year, New Life’, the Revellion menu features festive favourites such as robalo e açai – cured sea bass with açai ponzu – and a showstopping main course: grilled fresh lobster glazed with miso and served with green papaya pickles.

This New Year’s Eve, enjoy a lavish seafood feast at Shelley Street’s Percy’s . Chef Braden Reardon will be serving up fresh favourites from the raw bar such as Oysri oysters and prawn ceviche, alongside their signature dish: the sumptuous lobster bao.

    Margo-Chef's-Counter-Experience

Looking for something a little more European? Chef Mario Paecke’s New Year’s Eve menu at Margo  showcases the very best of modern European cuisine, with German influenced-dishes using fresh, local ingredients. This seven-course menu starts with a Fukuoka snow crab cocktail, peaks at a roasted pork belly with Brussel sprouts, muscat grapes and violet mustard, and is completed with a classic: profiteroles.

Showman Group newcomer Brooklyn Yakuza  will also be serving a New Year’s Eve special menu this year. As the name implies, chef Lorcan Tang fuses American and Japanese flavours with a menu that includes a cured salmon roll with sake, Okinawa brown sugar, shikuwasa and cream cheese; and saffron risotto with lobster and edamame.
