New restrictions on powder-like substances in cabin luggage for US and Australia/New Zealand flights

With effect from 30th June 2018, the United States of America Transportation Security Administration (TSA), the Australian Government Department of Home Affairs, and the New Zealand Civil Aviation Authority, have introduced new security restrictions on the carriage of certain types of powders into the cabin of an aircraft.
Flights departing to the USA
Passengers are permitted to carry less than 12oz (350ml) of powder-like substances (for example: flour, sugar, ground coffee, spices) in the cabin of aircraft flying to the United States. Passengers will undergo additional security checks at the boarding gate in Hong Kong before departure (or Vancouver for passengers travelling on CX888 to New York).
Items excluded from the less than 12oz (350ml) restriction include baby formula, medication and human remains. Duty-free powders are also excluded when contained inside of a properly sealed Secure Tamper Evident Bag.
Flights departing from Australia/New Zealand
Passengers are permitted to carry a maximum of 12oz (350ml) of inorganic powders (for example: salt, sand, talcum powder and some types of make-up) in the cabin of aircraft flying from Australia/New Zealand. Passengers should remove and separate powders, liquids, aerosols and gels from their cabin baggage and place them separately in a tray for x-ray examination at security screening point when departing Australia/New Zealand.
Items excluded from the 12oz (350ml) restriction include baby products used to care for and/or feed an infant/toddler, medical/therapeutic products and cremated remains. Duty-free powders are also excluded when contained inside of a sealed bag with proof of purchase attached.
Passengers with quantities of powder over the limitation
Passengers with quantities of powder that exceed the limitation are suggested to place these items into your checked baggage. Any excessive quantities of powder intercepted during security screening will be required to be surrendered and be disposed of by the security screening officers.
