Maximum single item weight and dimensions

Any baggage that weighs more than 32kg / 70lbs or measures more than 203cm / 80in in total dimension must be repacked into split-up units within these limits. Your bag’s total dimension is the sum of its width, height and length. (L+W+H=203cm/80 inch)

If your bag cannot be split, please contact your local reservation office before you fly and we’ll investigate if we can accommodate your item.

We do not accept bags that exceed the aforementioned limits without prior approval.

Customers are advised to also check for any extra baggage charges.

Check-in baggage allowance for infants less than 2 years old

If you have not booked a seat for your infant you may check in a maximum of 2 pieces of luggage with a total weight of 10kg / 22 lbs, for them, plus a car seat and a stroller.

Infants with a confirmed separate seat, travelling with a child ticket, are entitled to the same luggage allowance as an adult traveller. See more about travelling with a baby.

Pre-flight checklist

Please take note of the following notes:

Check your luggage for prohibited items and items with restrictions

Depending on where you fly, there are a series of restrictions on certain items - and items which are prohibited to travel with entirely. For example, liquids, gases and aerosols are only allowed to be brought on board in certain volumes. Take the time to review our restricted items and prohibited items for a smooth flight.

Limit the amount of spare batteries you travel with

Please ensure that any batteries you travel with are stored properly and in acceptable amounts. Read more about spare batteries.

Be mindful of your luggage allowance

It is possible to travel with musical instruments and sports equipment, although please be aware rules differ according to your route. In addition, you can check in extra baggage for a small fee.

  • If you travel with a smart bag, you must be able to remove the battery in case the bag has to be checked-in at any point during the journey.
  • You must carry the removed lithium battery in your cabin baggage and it will be treated in accordance with existing spare lithium battery requirements.

For more details regarding baggage information, including controlled and banned items in addition to the carriers’ policy on batteries, please visit travelling with spare batteries.

Your baggage will be through-checked to your final destination if you are holding connecting itineraries booked on a single ticket or if you are connecting between flights operated by Cathay Pacific Group.

As a courtesy, Cathay Pacific and Cathay Dragon will also through-check your bags to your final destination if you are travelling on separate tickets involving connections with our airline partners provided that your journey begins with Cathay Pacific or Cathay Dragon.

Please note however that through-check may not be possible if your travel begins with an airline that does not provide this service.

Free baggage allowance and extra baggage charges for flights that involve one or more other airlines (i.e. not Cathay Pacific or Cathay Dragon) rely on a new method of calculation. This is in agreement with the new baggage policy from the International Air Transport Association (IATA). Read more about our most significant carrier rules.

If you use a mobility aid* or assistive device** to get around, take note of your route to see what you can bring along free of charge.

Items include portable electronic medical devices, canes, walkers, crutches, wheelchairs, and wheelchair accessories. Please note that wheelchairs are subject to stowage criteria.

For flights to the USA, there are no restrictions on the number of mobility aids and assistive aids you can bring on board for free. On flights to other destinations, you may bring one assistive device and two mobility aids per passenger.

Please see more in our help for passengers section for more information.

*Mobility aid is defined as an assistive device that is used by individuals with mobility impairments such as cane and walker, crutch and wheelchair.

**Assistive device is defined as any piece of equipment that assists a passenger with a disability to cope with the effects of his or her disability. Such devices are intended to assist a passenger with a disability to hear, see, communicate, manoeuvre or perform other functions of daily life and may include medical devices and medications.

Your ticket is determined by something known as the ‘most significant carrier’, which determines baggage allowance for air travel.
