Free COVID-19 insurance is automatically included for trips commencing between 7 December 2020 and 31 May 2021 (both dates inclusive). Coverage applies to anyone with air tickets issued by Cathay Pacific – this can be on flights operated by Cathay Pacific or by one of our codeshare or interline partners. You are not required to fill out any application forms before you fly.

This coverage is provided by AXA. If you have inquiries or are diagnosed with COVID-19 during your travels, you may contact AXA for assistance.

Medical expenses which are not covered by our free COVID-19 insurance will not be reimbursed by AXA.

You will be automatically eligible for our free COVID-19 insurance when departing from your home country*. This coverage will be effective once your trip has commenced and is valid for 30 days or upon your return to your home country*, whichever is earlier. You are not obligated to use this insurance, but it’s there if you need it.

The insurance is valid whether it is a one-way, return or multi-city/stopover ticket.

If you are diagnosed with COVID-19 during the covered period, then insurance will continue to be provided for the duration of your medical treatment or quarantine (subject to applicable limits and exclusions) until your return to your home country*, even if it continues after the end of the covered period.

*Home country: any country/region to which you are granted rights of citizenship or permanent residence by the respective governmental authority and/or the country/region where you are assessed for tax purposes.

No. For the insurance to apply, the first flight of your trip must be on or after 7 December 2020.

If you’re diagnosed with COVID-19 whilst you’re away from your home country*, we will take care of your overseas medical expenses and quarantine costs, subject to applicable limits and exclusions.

We will also cover the cost of all overseas PCR tests, whether positive or negative, that you are required to undergo as part of your medical treatment for COVID-19, or to establish whether you have COVID-19, subject to applicable limits and exclusions.

If you have been in contact with someone diagnosed with COVID-19 and are required to undergo a PCR test, we will also cover the cost of the test.

If you are suspected of having COVID-19 and required to take PCR tests in order to return to your home country*, we will cover up to 2 PCR tests. (For further details on PCR test coverage, please refer to the question ‘Am I covered for the cost of a COVID-19 test?’ below.)

You will not be covered for any medical treatment costs, quarantine expenses or costs of PCR tests in your home country*. The benefits of the insurance cover only apply overseas. You will also not be covered for any medical or quarantine expenses that do not result from COVID-19. No, this insurance should be viewed as a supplement to your personal travel insurance, as it does not cover events such as flight delay/cancellation, loss/damage of baggage or medical expenses/assistance other than those resulting from COVID-19.

Yes, this insurance covers infants and children.

The benefits that require pre-approval include emergency medical repatriation due to COVID-19, repatriation of mortal remains due to COVID-19, and funeral expenses due to COVID-19. You must obtain pre-approval by calling AXA on the numbers provided bellow. Not doing so will void any assistance.

You are not covered within your home country*. You are covered wherever you travel outside your home country*, except for the following countries/regions: Iran, Syria, North Korea, Cuba, Venezuela, Crimea and Sevastopol.

Your COVID-19 PCR test will be covered in the following scenarios: 

  1. If you have tested positive for COVID-19, any subsequent PCR tests required as part of your medical treatment will be covered. 
  2. You are suspected of having COVID-19 and a doctor requests that a PCR test be performed. The cost will be covered regardless if the result is positive or negative. 
  3. You are in close contact with someone who has contracted COVID-19. The cost of PCR test will be covered regardless if the result is positive or negative. 
  4. If you fail an official temperature check or PCR test which prevents you from returning to your home country, up to 2 PCR tests will be covered - regardless if the result is positive or negative. 

Please note that the following scenarios are not covered: 

  1. The cost of a PCR test in your home country 
  2. Any PCR test which is routine, expected or which you knew, or should have known, you would need before you started your trip 
  3. Any more than 2 PCR tests (in relation to point 4 above)

You will be covered if both countries – the one you fly into, and the one you travel onwards to – are outside of your home country*.

*Home country: any country/region to which you are granted rights of citizenship or permanent residence by the respective governmental authority and/or the country/region where you are assessed for tax purposes.

If you have tested positive for COVID-19, we recommend that you contact AXA as soon as possible. To access their emergency medical repatriation service, it is mandatory for you to contact AXA to obtain pre-approval.

The following documents are required when you contact AXA:

  • Flight ticket e-mail confirmation
  • Boarding pass
  • Passport, including residency visa page, if applicable
  • COVID-19 positive test result that should be dated after the first day of travel
  • Email address and contact number where you can be reached, and the details of those assisting you
  • Any other document requested by AXA for processing your request

You will also need to allow AXA to have access to your medical data in order to arrange assistance.

If you are eligible for free COVID-19 insurance, we will provide USD100 for each full day you have to spend in quarantine, up to a maximum of 14 days, and will cover up to 2 PCR tests to clear you to return to your home country. If you need medical treatment for COVID-19, this will also be covered up to USD200,000.

No. Compulsory quarantine introduced by the local government or authority you are travelling to, based on your departure country/region, is not covered by this insurance. 

Yes, if you are eligible for free COVID-19 insurance, we will provide USD100 for each full day you have to spend in quarantine, up to a maximum of 14 days.

You will be covered if you bought your ticket directly with Cathay Pacific or via a travel agent. Coverage applies to anyone who is flying with an air ticket issued by Cathay Pacific – this can be on flights operated by Cathay Pacific or by one of our codeshare or interline partners. If you purchased your ticket from another airline or a codeshare partner airline, you will not be covered, even if one or more flights is on a Cathay Pacific aircraft.

AXA will arrange and cover the repatriation trip for your travel companion (who is with you at the trip location) to enable that person to accompany you. In addition, AXA will enable the children who were travelling with you to return home, if no adult member of your family is present at the trip location with them and if your repatriation takes place more than 24 hours before their originally planned return date.

Yes. In order to get assistance, you will need to provide your personal details to AXA who will be arranging assistance and handling your claims. We may also share some of your personal information to allow AXA to verify your identity and dates of travel.

Yes, as long as you hold an air ticket issued by Cathay Pacific and have flown on Cathay Pacific.

Yes, you are covered as long as you have a valid Cathay Pacific-issued ticket booked to travel on a flight operated by Cathay Pacific or one of our codeshare/interline partners. To be eligible for cover, at least one sector must be operated by Cathay Pacific.

No. Coverage ends after 30 days or upon your return to your home country*, whichever is earlier. Extension is not possible under this policy.

The coverage is valid outside of your home country* for 30 days following the first completed flight of your journey. It ends when you return to your home country*. No coverage is provided when you return to your home country*, or after 30 days have passed, whichever is earlier.

Yes, you will be covered for COVID-19 claims, even if authorities advise against travel to that country/region. However, travel to the following countries/regions is not covered: Crimea and Sebastopol (also known as Sevastopol), Cuba, Iran, North Korea, Syria, Venezuela, Yemen and Zimbabwe.

You are not obligated to use this insurance, but it’s there for you if you need it. Should you have concerns about your personal information being shared with AXA, please contact travel.claims@axa.com.hk.
