Get your caffeine fix

Some people wake up fresh after a flight, while others need a little pick-me-up. Give yourself a caffeinated kick-start, and become acquainted with European café culture at the same time.

Nowhere is coffee taken more seriously than in Italy. Discover for yourself in Rome and Milan, where etiquette dictates that caffé latte or cappuccino should be taken in the morning standing up, and knocked back quickly.

Eat your way through the sugary churros and magdalenas of Madrid, or head to Barcelona’s famous La Boqueria Market, best experienced in the morning before the crowds.

A cup of coffee in one of the many historic sidewalk cafés in Paris can be a day-long affair involving people-watching, pastry-eating, and picturesque vistas of the likes of Montmartre and the Champs-Élysées.

Explore the sights

The Eiffel Tower. The Colosseum. Big Ben. All European sightseeing bucket list classics – and there’s plenty more to tick off with our latest routes.

Take a tour of Dublin’s most historic sights, including St Patrick’s Cathedral, Dublin Castle, Trinity College, and the Docklands (before heading to the main event – the Guinness Storehouse).

Replete with opulent buildings and quirky landmarks, Brussels’ famously diverse architectural styles range from gothic to futuristic to art nouveau – making it a city perfect for wandering and Instagramming.

It might be an economic powerhouse, Frankfurt also has a village-like old town replete with historic architecture, cobbled alleys, and traditional beer taverns – while further afield lies the Black Forest and Heidelberg.

Relax and recharge

You’re on holiday – no need to wear yourself out on your first day. Spend the morning relaxing and you can still get a taste of the city while replenishing your energies for the trip ahead.

Well-being experts claim that walking barefoot, or ‘earthing’, is the answer to jetlag. Try for yourself in the lush parks of Dusseldorf, such as Hofgarten, just beside the banks of the River Rhine.

There’s nowhere better to flop than the beach. Luckily, Barcelona’s beautiful coastline is accessed from the city centre, with some of the best beaches including Barceloneta, Mar Bella, and Nova Icaria.

Zurich and Copenhagen are known for their urban swimming spots, and come the warmer months residents congregate at the wooden jetties of the many lidos, lakes, rivers, and spas that the cities have to offer.

Shop 'til you drop

It’s called retail therapy for a reason: shopping, it turns out, can be a powerful mood booster. Shake off that morning grogginess by upgrading your wardrobe or stocking up on souvenirs.

Shop the latest designer collections, head to high streets, or rummage through vintage stores in London, Milan, or Paris – the ‘Big Three’ fashion week cities.

Manchester is well-known for its excellent shopping, mixing in big malls, designer boutiques, bargain-filled outlets, and of course, its famous football club's official stores.

Madrid has more to offer than just Spanish luxury labels. Uncover second-hand treasures and handmade designer artefacts at local flea markets and stock up on home-grown brands ZARA and Desigual.

Hit the ground running

Keeping up your fitness routine on your first day is a win-win: not only will it help combat jetlag, but you'll find your bearings in your new surroundings.

Pack your sneakers for a leisurely circuit of some of Paris's historic highlights on the left bank, or enjoy landmark views along the banks of the Seine River.

Be your own guide in Rome, and pack in more ancient ruins, cobblestone alleys, and architectural wonders into a morning run than the average sightseeing tour.

Cycling is the way of life in Amsterdam and Copenhagen, two cities renowned for their flat terrain and bike-friendly infrastructure – perfect for exploring beautiful canalside neighbourhoods and charming, old-world streets.
