The Cleaner

Former crime boss Dragon Ho (Chin Shih-chieh) has a new line of work – but it’s only slightly less grisly. As the head of a cleaning company that specialises in scenes where people have died, he must deal with blood, decay and other pleasant messes. At the same time, Ho is attempting to clean up the mess of his own life – starting with his relationship with his daughter. Blending comedy and drama, The Cleaner (TV, Drama) provides a novel lens through which to explore life and death.

My Sunshine

Shy schoolboy Takuya (Keitatsu Koshiyama) dreads winters in his hometown, when he's expected to join the other boys in playing ice hockey. After encountering new girl Sakura (Kiara Takanashi), a talented figure skater, he finds himself irresistibly drawn both to her and this graceful sport. My Sunshine (Movie, Drama) at first appears to be a cosy coming-of-age tale, but the film’s rosy glow belies all the pain and confusion of adolescence – a deft sleight of hand by writer-director Hiroshi Okuyama.

Beethoven Blues

On Beethoven Blues (Audio, Classical), pianist and singer Jon Batiste reimagines Beethoven’s masterpieces in a way only the bold, eclectic and highly gifted Batiste can. Weaving intricate connections between classical music and blues, he breathes new life into famed compositions such as Für Elise and 5th Symphony, showing that a reverence for classical music need not mean never daring to tamper with it. The result is an album that lovers of Beethoven, blues and everything in between will enjoy.

Bogart: Life Comes in Flashes

The life and career of screen legend Humphrey Bogart have already been well documented, but Bogart: Life Comes in Flashes (Movie, Documentary) offers something different. Drawing on archival writing and footage, it attempts to tell Bogart’s life story in his own words. As its title suggests, the film plays out like a series of flashbacks, snappily paced yet always insightful. It’s an engaging look at the actor’s illustrious Hollywood career and his myriad – and sometimes rocky – personal relationships.

Conclave

Behind the closed doors of the Vatican, Cardinal Thomas Lawrence (Ralph Fiennes) faces a grave responsibility: overseeing the selection of a new pope. The task places him in the thick of an intense power struggle, and as candidates scheme and connive for the papacy, Lawrence becomes increasingly troubled. Conclave (Movie, Thriller) depicts all this with suspense, drama and occasional humour, acknowledging the high stakes of the situation as well as its absurdity. Fiennes is, as always, superb.

We Live in Time

Never underestimate the power of a sad love story; We Live in Time (Movie, Drama) is proof of how intelligent and moving such a narrative can be when done right. The lovers in question are Tobias (Andrew Garfield) and Almut (Florence Pugh) who meet serendipitously and begin building a life together. But as they navigate the joys and struggles of work and family, they’re plagued by the ominous sense that time is running out, and the decision of how to spend that time becomes ever more fraught.

Emilia Pérez

Thriller, tragedy, social critique and musical: Emilia Pérez (Movie, Drama) is all this and more. It follows the lives of three women in Mexico; Rita (Zoe Saldaña), a brilliant yet struggling lawyer, is sought out by Emilia (Karla Sofía Gascón), a cartel leader who wishes to begin a new life as her authentic self. Yet this means cutting ties not only with her murderous past, but her wife, Jessi (Selena Gomez). Suspend your disbelief and be carried away by this genre- and expectation-defying film.

English Teacher

Series English Teacher (TV, Comedy) follows high school teacher Evan Marquez (creator and star Brian Jordan Alvarez) as he struggles to navigate the increasingly complex world of education. While passionate about his job, Marquez regularly finds himself ill-equipped to deal with his wily Gen-Z students, their demanding guardians and his equally clueless co-workers. Exploring contemporary issues with both humour and tenderness, English Teacher is a fresh take on a familiar comic set-up.

Cicada Cycle

Revisiting the past heals old and new wounds in Cicada Cycle (TV, Drama). It’s 2020, Covid-19 has sent the world in turmoil, and Tou Ka-tou aka “Tomato” (Fish Liew) has returned to Hong Kong for the first time in years. While quarantining, she reminisces. As a lonely teen, she had found solace in her school’s theatre club – until their play was abruptly cancelled by another health crisis: SARs. Now, Tomato needs the club more than ever; can she get its members back together and finally make it to opening night?

Good One

Sam (Lily Collias) has always been the “good one”. At 17, she still seeks approval from the adults around her – including her father, Chris, and his oldest friend, Matt. So when Matt’s son, Dylan, refuses to join a hiking trip with Sam and the two men, she dutifully goes along anyway. But it’s during this trip, which becomes increasingly unsettling, that things change for Sam. Betrayal, followed by disillusionment, mark her entry into adulthood, in the understated yet insightful Good One (Movie, Drama).

A Girl Named Ann

Ann (Yuumi Kawai) has lived a life few could contemplate, let alone endure: an abuse survivor, she's now battling poverty and addiction. A run-in with an unconventional detective leads to an offer of help and resources, and finally shown kindness, Ann begins to strive for a better life. But A Girl Named Ann (Movie, Drama) reminds viewers that entrenched social injustices aren’t so easily overcome, as the pandemic threatens to isolate Ann from her support network and erase her hard-earned progress.

The Eyes of Tammy Faye

In the 1980s, Jim and Tammy Faye Bakker reigned over Christian television in the US; together, they hosted The PTL (“Praise the Lord”) Club, a variety talk show on which they would urge faithful viewers to call in and pledge donations. Behind the scenes, however, their lifestyle was outrageously lavish. The Eyes of Tammy Faye (Movie, Drama) is a biopic that charts the rise and fall of the infamous pair. The film’s highlight is without doubt its leading lady: Jessica Chastain brings Tammy Faye sensationally to life.

Joker: Folie à Deux

Joker: Folie à Deux (Movie, Drama), the sequel to Todd Phillips’ eerie Joker, sees Joaquin’s Phoenix’s Arthur Fleck fatefully meet the love of his life. Following his crimes of the first film, Fleck is now incarcerated at Arkham State Hospital awaiting trial. Locked up and abused, he battles ferociously with his two identities. It’s in this state that he encounters fellow inmate Lee Quinzel, aka Harley Quinn. Captivated by Joker, she encourages Fleck to embrace this dark, dangerous side of himself – with dramatic consequences.

The Unwavering Brotherhood

With glossy action sequences, themes of loyalty and morality, and a gritty version of Hong Kong as its backdrop, The Unwavering Brotherhood (Movie, Action/Adventure) is a faithful and entertaining homage to the city’s classic gangster movies. It stars Bosco Wong as Wah, a trusted gang member poised to one day take over from his powerful boss (a menacing Mark Cheng). However, Wah’s loyalty is tested when two fellow members – who also happen to be his best friends – appear to go rogue.

The Penguin

DC Studios’ The Penguin (TV, Drama) tells the origin story of one of Gotham City’s most notorious villains. Colin Farrell gives a Golden Globe-winning performance as Oz Cobb, a mid-level crook with an insatiable hunger for power. Following the death of top mobster Carmine Falcone, Cobb embarks on a bloody campaign to take his place, going up against Falcone’s daughter Sofia, who has just been released from Arkham State Hospital. Full of grit and drama, The Penguin immerses viewers deep in the murky criminal underworld of Gotham City.

The Wild Robot

When a house-helper robot named Roz washes up on a remote island, her programming seems of little use – until she comes across an orphaned gosling in need of care. Combining her instinct to serve with new wilderness skills, Roz gradually finds purpose and belonging in her new home; and when it comes under threat, she’s willing to do everything in her power to protect it. Beautifully animated, The Wild Robot (Movie, Animation) is a visually captivating tale of survival and sacrifice.
