Travel restrictions for passengers travelling to/transiting through Hong Kong

Important health notices

To protect the health and safety of our passengers and crew, we’re unable to accept anyone presenting symptoms consistent with COVID-19 for travel. We therefore ask that you to postpone travel if:

  • you are feeling unwell with respiratory symptoms, such as a fever, cough, sore throat or muscle aches;
  • you have been in close contact with a confirmed case of COVID-19 in the 14 days prior to travel; or
  • you have been diagnosed with COVID-19.

Please note: customers that have been diagnosed with COVID-19 are required to provide a medical certificate confirming they have recovered and are no longer contagious in order to travel.

Face coverings requirement

Effective 15 May 2020, all passengers are required to wear face coverings in situations where physical distancing (minimum 2 metres) cannot be maintained. This includes during airport check-in, in the lounges, during boarding, in the aircraft cabin and during disembarkation, as well as in high-traffic areas such as security lines and baggage collection areas. Passengers who are unable to tolerate a face covering, including young children, are exempt from this requirement. We kindly ask that passengers bring their own face coverings. 

Government travel restrictions

The Hong Kong SAR government has implemented the following travel restrictions for passengers arriving in and transiting through Hong Kong.

Entry restrictions
Effective from 25 March 2020 (00:00 HKT), only Hong Kong residents with following documents will be permitted to enter Hong Kong:

  • Hong Kong Permanent Identity Card
  • Hong Kong SAR passport or British National (Overseas) passport (with right of abode in Hong Kong)
  • Hong Kong Identity Card (this needs to be accompanied with a valid work or study visa)

Non-Hong Kong residents will be denied entry into Hong Kong.

Entry restriction exemptions
The following passengers are exempt from the entry restrictions:

  • Passengers travelling from Mainland China, Taiwan or Macao SAR, and have not been to other country/region in past 14 days
  • Diplomatic/official passport holders (subject to prevailing visa requirements)
  • The spouse and children of Hong Kong residents
  • Local government personnel performing official duties
  • Personnel approved by the Hong Kong SAR government to carry out anti-epidemic work
  • Passengers holding a new entry visa to work, study, establish or join in any business, or to take up residence in Hong Kong

Passengers falling into this exemption category must still meet the minimum 14 days intended/permitted limit of stay in order to meet the 14 days of compulsory quarantine requirements – otherwise entry will be refused

Transit restrictions
Passengers are no longer permitted to transit through Hong Kong International Airport.

All sea-to-air ferry services (Greater Bay Area to Hong Kong) and air-to-sea ferry services (Hong Kong to Greater Bay Area) have also been suspended.

Additional entry requirements
A health declaration form must be completed and submitted to the Hong Kong Department of Health on arrival. These forms are distributed onboard all flights to Hong Kong. Alternatively, passengers can submit their details by filling out the online form prior to departure – upon completion, a QR code (valid for 24 hours) will be provided to present to officials on arrival.

All passengers arriving into Hong Kong will be required to undergo a medical test for COVID-19 upon completion of all health, immigration, customs and quarantine clearance requirements.

The test, which involves providing a saliva sample, will be conducted by medical professionals at the Department of Health Temporary Specimen Collection Centre at the Asia World Expo building. Passengers will receive directions and assistance when leaving the baggage claim area. Additionally, passengers will be required to wait for their test results.
