The Amazing Spider-Man 2

Aug 2014

Power of love: Emma Stone and Andrew Garfield’s chemistry is the film’s greatest asset

Tangled romanceWith The Amazing Spider-Man 2 premiering onboard this month, Michael Adams takes a lo...ok at an important female figure behind Peter Parker’s crime-fighting careerEvery superhero needs a supportive girlfriend, whether it’s Iron Man’s Pepper Potts or Superman’s Lois Lane. But in the case of Spider-Man, plucky Gwen Stacy stands beside rather than behind her web-slinging boyfriend. Although Mary Jane Watson would later become Peter Parker’s lady, comic-book fans never forgot that feisty Gwen was his first love. While the previous Spider-Man film trilogy pushed her into the background, 2012’s The Amazing Spider-Man reboot and its sequel have succeeded largely because they’ve tackled this controversial love affair with as much gusto as they devote to the huge action sequences.Starring Andrew Garfield and Emma Stone again, The Amazing Spider-Man 2 sees our hero trying to honour the promise he made to Gwen’s dying father that he’d keep her safe by leaving her alone. But with villains Electro and the Green Goblin unleashing havoc on New York City, Spidey needs all the help he can get. Luckily for him, Gwen is a smart, sassy, brave and independent woman who can do her bit to beat the baddies. In the first film, Gwen’s scientific prowess leads her to develop an antidote that thwarted the Lizard’s reptilian infection plans for the city. Likewise, this time around, she’s the one who insulates Spidey’s web-shooters so he can battle Electro. She’s also right there by Peter’s side when he and the Green Goblin have their spectacular and fateful showdown. An expert at dramatic romantic comedy, director Marc Webb (500 Days of Summer) uses Peter and Gwen’s wisecracking repartee to set his Spider-Man films apart from other superhero franchises. While he has a charming leading man in Garfield, the films’ great strength is Stone, whose whip-smart screen presence was established in hits such as Easy A (2010) and Crazy, Stupid, Love (2011). Of course, the fact that Stone and Garfield have been a real-life couple since 2011 only adds to their sizzling on-screen chemistry.Following the box-office success of The Amazing Spider-Man 2, Webb has announced a third instalment slated for 2016. Fans of the comic book will know, however, that this next film is likely to be a darker journey for our masked superhero.
