To celebrate another year of cinematic triumphs, we present an onboard selection of films honoured a...t the 87th Academy Awards, as well as several picks of previous winnersThe glitterati descended on the red carpet last month for the biggest event on the film calendar. Presented by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, the 87th Academy Awards celebrated some of the greatest cinematic achievements in 2014, from breakthrough performances to awe-inspiring technical innovations.Comedies were the big winners: Wes Anderson’s Grand Budapest Hotel and Alejandro González Iñárritu’s biting satire Birdman each received nine nominations, including for Best Picture. Biopics also fared well: Eddie Redmayne received his first Best Actor nomination for his role as physicist Stephen Hawking in The Theory of Everything. The Imitation Game, based on British code-breaker Alan Turing’s life, and wrestling drama Foxcatcher also received nods from the Academy.Superhero flicks were another hard-hitter. Marvel’s Captain America: The Winter Soldier and X-Men: Days of Future Past all received Oscar mentions for their stunning visual effects while Big Hero 6 picked up a nomination for Best Animated Film.Besides this year’s standout productions, we’re also celebrating some of the most accomplished examples of film-making in cinema history.
