Change for Good
Cathay Pacific and UNICEF have been running the Change for Good inflight fundraising programme since 1991. Travellers on Cathay Pacific flights are encouraged to donate any spare change they have to UNICEF when returning from their journeys. The money collected is used to fund UNICEF’s relief and development works in more than 150 developing countries around the world.
Every year, about 20 Cathay Pacific staff members participate in a UNICEF field visit to witness at first-hand how the spare change raised by Change for Good is being used to improve the lives of children.
The Cathay Pacific Wheelchair Bank
Established in 1996 – Cathay Pacific’s 50th anniversary year – the Wheelchair Bank raises funds to purchase specially adapted wheelchairs for children with neuromuscular diseases. To date, more than HK$12 million have been donated to the Wheelchair Bank. Since 1999, an average of one month’s proceeds from Cathay Pacific’s Change for Good inflight fundraising programme has been allocated to the bank each year.
The Cathay Pacific Group has responded quickly to help those affected by natural disasters, making charitable donations and launching fundraising campaigns to assist a number of major relief efforts in recent years.
These efforts included cash donations raised by passengers through inflight fundraising campaigns on Cathay Pacific and Dragonair flights, contributions from staff with company matching, and free cargo shipments, excess baggage and ticket sponsorship for various local and overseas charities to help them send relief supplies and rescue teams to the affected areas. Major relief efforts instigated by the Group in recent years include:
2015 Nepal earthquake
2013 Philippines Typhoon and Sichuan earthquake
2011 Japan, Yunnan, New Zealand earthquakes and Thailand flooding
2010 Qinghai earthquake, Pakistan flooding and Gansu mudslide
Cathay Pacific has been continuously offering support to members of the community involved in charitable causes through various types of in-kind sponsorship, including complimentary or reduced-charge air tickets.
